MS & MOGAD Neurologist in Sydney

Dr Benjamin Trewin is a specialist neurologist and neuroimmunologist who sees people with multiple sclerosis (MS), MOG antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) and related immune conditions of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. He consults at College Street Specialists in Sydney, and by telehealth for patients who live outside Sydney.

Multiple sclerosis (MS)

MS care includes confirming the diagnosis, choosing a disease-modifying therapy that suits your circumstances, monitoring with regular review and MRI, and managing relapses. Dr Trewin also looks after patients receiving infusion therapies at the North Shore Private Hospital infusion centre.

MOGAD

MOG antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is an inflammatory condition in which antibodies target myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), a protein on the surface of myelin. It most often causes optic neuritis, inflammation of the spinal cord (transverse myelitis) or acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). MOGAD is distinct from MS and from aquaporin-4 antibody NMOSD, and telling them apart matters because treatment and outlook differ.

Dr Trewin's PhD (University of Sydney, 2024) focused on distinguishing MOGAD from MS and NMOSD at onset, and on comparing immunotherapies in MOGAD. His research has examined how the dose and duration of treatment for a first attack relate to the risk of relapse, and he was lead author of a review of 4,699 people with MOGAD worldwide. He sees people with MOGAD for diagnosis, treatment of attacks and decisions about long-term (maintenance) therapy.

NMOSD, autoimmune encephalitis and related conditions

Dr Trewin also assesses and treats neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), autoimmune encephalitis, neurosarcoidosis, Susac syndrome and other immune-mediated conditions of the nervous system.

Second opinions and telehealth

Second opinions on diagnosis or treatment are welcome for MS, MOGAD and NMOSD. Patients who live outside Sydney can be seen by video telehealth. A current referral from your GP or specialist is needed to claim a Medicare rebate.

Research

Dr Trewin completed a multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology fellowship at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (2018) and a PhD in neuroimmunology at the University of Sydney (2024), where he continues as a post-doctoral researcher. He is site principal investigator at College Street Specialists for MSBase, an international registry of outcomes in MS and other neuroimmunological diseases. He has been a sub-investigator on MS and NMOSD clinical trials and presented research on MOGAD treatment at ECTRIMS 2024.
